The dry drawing lubricants are based on sodium, calcium, potassium or their blends.

The performance of a lubricant is based on:

- Temperature stability
- Reduction of friction
- Flowing of the lube in the die box
- Absorption of some acid from the pickling process
- Absorption of some lime from coating process
- Low moisture absorption.
